GSHAS Intra-League

Great effort in the intra-league tourney!! Our bats never really materialized but we played pretty well nonetheless. We came back to beat the black-shirted Cub’s team 7-4 in the first game. Our defense was pretty solid throughout with the OFs making most of the plays. Jon L. had a nice stab of a ground ball to his left and gunned across for the out with Chaz making an excellent stretch. Charlie was striking them out left and right and ended up with 3 Ks. Going into the bottom of the 6th down 4-3, Chris W. led off with a line drive to left that was misplayed into a double. Then the hit parade started. With the bases loaded and the score tied, Ben hit a grounder back to the pitcher that led to an out at home but hustled to beat the return throw to first. Charlie then got a big hit to drive in two runs and put us over the top. While we didn’t get a ton of hits, we had some big ones. Chris D. hit a deep ball to RC and Pete, KC, Jon L., and Ron all had some good hits. Tony hit into some tough luck with a few hard grounders that the first basemen magically turned into outs (a them that would continue in the second game).

We came up just short against the Blue Cubs team. We held them to far fewer runs than in our other 2 victories against them but just couldn’t string enough hits together. I think the final score was 8-6. Our usually solid defense had a few lapses but otherwise we played pretty well. Tony nearly made two tremendous plays at SS, one diving to his right for a grounder that just tipped off his glove and the other diving in short LF for a fly ball. Chaz had some nice hits and KC led us off with a big hit in the top of the 7th but we just ran out of outs. Good effort though!! Congratulations on a fine season!! I’m looking forward to getting started again in the fall so make sure and let Charlie know if you are available (if you haven’t already).

Ben brought his post-game Kangaroo Court beverages this week and a good time was had by all. Thanks, Ben!! Based on a team vote, we’ll carry over the points to the fall season so here is the update from this week’s games as best I can remember (let me know if I missed anything).

Jon L. (4)
Dan W. (3)
Tony (3) [+2 for throws]
Chris D. (2.5)
KC (2.5)
Chris W. (2) [+1 for fly ball, +1 for DP]
Chaz (1.5)
Pete (1.5) [+1 for fly ball]
John B. (1.5) [+1 for missed tag, -0.5 for fake throw/tag at second (hee hee)]
Ben W. (1) [-5 for beverages, cold and delicious!!]
Charlie (1) [-1.5 for 3 K’s]
Nate (0.5)

Congrats on a great season!! We’ll plan on having a GSHAS end-of-summer-season get-together. I’m thinking of Leopold Bros. followed by a screening of Bad News Bears. Of course, I’m open to other suggestions as well (Tigers game, Mudhens game, etc.). Watch your inbox for the invite- probably later in August due to many people’s travel plans.

That actually wasn’t a true groundball. It stayed ankle high until it was right in front of me.. and it which it one hopped into my knee. Tough call, but I’ll take a point guess.

Ok. just thought about.. it IS a groundball, but it wasn’t an easy ground ball.

Ben- definitely wasn’t an easy play. I have no problem removing the assessed point. The count has been updated accordingly.
