GSHAS Fall #3, #4
Good effort in the games yesterday!! Though we lost both ends of the DH, we competed hard- nearly pulled out a victory in the first game (8-7) and didn’t quit in the second (19-14) despite being down by a bunch. We didn’t string a ton of hits together in the first game and hit into some tough luck with hard hit balls that turned into force outs at home. In the second game we scored a bunch but so did they. They definitely had some guys that could hit (some fat guy named “Country” and the young kid with the ridiculous bat speed) but we hung tough. Our defense was pretty solid with Chris W. making some nice running catches in the OF. Jon L. had some great attemps at foul balls (sorry about the “you’ve got room” call), and Brian made some great stabs at pitcher, including starting a nice 1-6-3 twin killing. We almost turned another DP with Chaz stabbing a grounder, throwing to second, and then the throw back to first with Charlie covering (I though we had him but first base calls were bit random again). I was getting pissed off at the end with all the arguing, a two minute trip to the mound by the “manager”, questionable use of the courtesy runner (i.e. I don’t need a courtesy runner until a fast guy is the last out), and the shenanigans with people running to second waving their arms and yelling and screaming. They can be bush league and we’ll play the game right. The umpiring again was rather poor- the strike zone was all over the place, they didn’t make the calls (the guy in the field told me he saw the ball hit the runner immediately but didn’t call it as he though the home plate umpire would make the call?).
OK- on to the scoring. I’ve tried to put in the things that I remember but feel free to add/edit via the comments and I’ll update. Looks like we’ve finally got an OF that has climbed to the top of the list.
Dan W. (4) [+1 for missed grounder in OF]
Jon L. (3.5) [+0 for wide throw but the guy injured himself and was tagged out at first]
Tony (3.5)
Chris D. (2.5)
KC (3) [+0.5 for tough luck K (horrible call)]
Chris W. (2.5) [+0.5 for tough luck K (horrible call)]
Chaz (2.5) [+1 for throwing error (though the runner put his hand up to block your view)]
John B. (2) [+1 for booted ground ball, -0.5 for 1-6-3 DP]
Pete (1.5)
Josh (1)
Ben W. (1)
Charlie (1)
Nate (0.5)
The post-Scandium era has now begun. I’m saddened that none of the GSHAS folks posted any moving tributes. Here are some comments I received from my Thurs. team (i.e. Deluxe Drapery/Roundtree):
AWESOME Johnny…Now you can swing something from the 00’s. And Johnny… although YOU mave have BOUGHT that bat in the 00’s
Believe me … that technology is from 96/97 baby…
Well Johnny long beard, I know the tears were probably streaming down your face as you wrote that message. I also hope that Soviet bat gets the burial it deserves, it truly was a testament to all those jerks out there waving those $300 bats around and trying to force technology on others. Damn them!! I will say a prayer tonight for the beloved Scandium, it will be missed greatly.
If you would like I will contact Marco, he works for M-DOT and I am sure they would love to have for a guard rail.
We could talk about taking up a collection and putting a plaque up next to the rail. Ohhh maybe one of those white crosses that you always see by the side of the road.
Also we expect your batting average to increase by at least 100 points now that you will be using a bat manufactured in the 21st century.
Sometimes things just have to go the way of lava lamps ,platform shoes for men and leisure suits. Just find solace that bat saw all of those in its day. To the next generation.
Tags: No TagsI think you’re underestimating the effect of all this. All of your bullshit bloopers that fell in for base hits because of that bat will be carrying 30 feet further… right into the gloves of waiting outfielders. You might not be able to hit your weight if you start using the CNT.
You need to visit every garage sale in southeastern Michigan between now and next spring until you find another Scandium. Either that or you should weld the crack shut and paint over it.
Chet Lemon couldn’t catch cold with any glove but that ratty piece of shit he used for 16 years in the big leagues. He restrung that thing every couple months. Got to a point that it didn’t even have a palm in it. He put a new glove on his hand and it acted like it was spring-loaded. Balls went in and popped right back out.
Seriously, you might never get another hit if you go to a better bat.
Just trying to help.

I actually deserve a point for the ally-oop I gave John off my glove on the grounder hit by Captain Bat Speed. It was pretty amazing just how much hang time that ball got given that it was a ricochet off of my glove. . .

Jon- no I don’t think a point was warranted on that ball since we had a previous agreement regarding the awarding of points for that particular hitter. A so called point amnesty in the interest of safety…
