New Bat
After many years of solid service, the Scandium, forged from rare Russian ore, gave up the ghost last year (relive the tragedy with this post and recall the moving tributes from the Thursday team here). The bat (34/30) was beloved by many on both BGBG and GSHAS. The traditional mourning period was observed.
Following the demise of the Scandium, Ryan and Kenny from the Thursday team convinced me to “try a bat from this century.” So, I tried the Easton Synergy CNT Flex late last year and decided to buy one to replace the Scandium. The new bat (34/28) arrived yesterday, and the ceremonial torch has been passed. Gone are the days of Russian earth metals- hello Carbon nanotubes!! One part of the story that John humbly omits is that last fall, the vaunted Roundtree Co-ed team asked John to sub on a Friday night in Saline and play a little shortstop.
The Scandium had only recently passed, and the wounds were still fresh. But John soldiered on and played a doubleheader, swinging a new war club and counseling himself that it wasn’t “too soon.”
Legend holds that, in his last at bat of the evening, John and his new hitting “acquaintance” deposited a softball beyond the fence in straightaway centerfield… a distance of some 310 feet.
At that moment, John realized that, indeed, it was not “too soon” and began hanging out frequently places of softball ill-repute, grazing for new friend, not unlike his Saline one-night-stand, for a longterm relationship.
And as John is sure to attest, she may be easy and a sure thing, but she’s not cheap!

What does it mean when it says that my comment is awaiting moderation? Does that mean that I need to put it on a diet? Does that mean someone else comes in and puts it on an involuntary diet?
Did I need to be more pithy? What exactly does pithy mean? Did I miss the day in AP English when we went over “how to be pithy.”
I am intimidated by this blog. I fear that it will start talking to me, very calmly and softly, like HAL.
I should leave immediately.

Greg, I found your comments to be quite pithy and robust in a healthy way. Comments from “new” people are placed in moderation to be approved by the moderator (i.e. me) as a way to prevent spam. Now that you have been appropriately moderated, your comments will appear immediately. Thus, if you hear anyone talking to you calmly and softly, it may indeed be HAL and not the blog. And you are right, she ain’t cheap!!

I think you should start a revolution- you clearly have strong feelings for Spam!! I’ve never had Spam in its “edible” form, but I’d probably try it before eating liver, brussel sprouts, or curds.
