Nintendo and the ‘86 World Series

134-RBIBaseball.jpgEveryone remembers Game 6 of the 1986 World Series- Mets vs. Red Sox and the ground ball heard ’round the world. I was a huge Mets fan at the time as one of my dad’s colleagues is David Magadan’s brother-in-law (he was a late season call-up that year but not on the postseason roster- he gave us tickets when they played the Braves, had lunch with me, and even took me to the batting cage to give me some hittings tips). But, I digress.

Some guy has paintakingly recreated the Mets comeback in the 10th with Nintendo’s RBI Baseball complete and in-sync with Vin Scully’s original commentary. Everything is authentic including the location of foul balls, outs, and, of course, the part with that Buckner guy. You gotta see the video (8:30) and then read the article about the making of it (you might have to try twice to get to the article).

Memories of that game? RBI Baseball on the Nintendo? Feel free to leave your comments here. I remember playing that game with my neighbor for hours at a time, and the video brought back some memories. Man, that music used to drive me crazy. Thanks to Pete for the link.

Am I the only one who had problems jacking homeruns down the foul line, and I SWEAR the shadow showed the ball being fair, but everytime it happened, the blast was called foul. EVERYTIME!!! I’m not bitter or anything though….

Yeah- I vaguely remember that as well. But, man, that was a long time ago, you might have to let that one go soon…

I do like the rendering of the players and the bats. They look like those short, fat, plastic bats that toddlers use to hit wiffle balls. Hee hee!!

You know, as a Red Sox fan, I have often thought “boy, I REALLY want to relive the ‘86 Series as much and in as many varied ways as possible.” By the way, if you find a Nintendo re-enactment of me getting dumped for the first time, my dog dying, or me passing a kidney stone, that’d be just about as awesome!

Actually, the Marty Barrett Player of the Game spot was great, and it was interesting to be reminded just how many times Scully jinxed the Sox in the first 3 minutes of the inning (you would think after ‘75 & ‘78 he would have known). And it is always good to know that there are people out there with even more time on their hands than me, ’cause how long did that thing take to set up?!?!

Jon- good stuff!! I’m pretty sure that you and all other members of the Red Sox nation would rather not see that footage any more (but surely the pain has abated a bit now that the Sox have a World Series ring).

If you want to learn more about how the guy created the video, click on the link to the WSJ article in the post. While it surely sounds like it took a while, he used a compter emulator and thus could go back an at-bat to get things right without having to restart from the beginning. The article mentions that some stuff took 200 attempts. Being unemployed certainly gives one the time to pursue these things. Interestingly enough, he got a job because of this video. Sweet!!
