GSHAS #6
Tough loss to Fenders this week. They just barely mercied us but they hit the ball a ton. Plus, the strike zone was jumping around a bit. There were some highlights: Tony drove in some key runs with 2 out hits, Todd made an awesome diving catch in LF and also tagged up from second on a fly out to the first baseman, and Jesse hit one HR and nearly hit another one as the LF caught it going over the fence.
Here are this week’s points as best I can remember- feel free to self-assess as needed. As always feel free to comment, correct, add, etc. Did someone hit into a DP? Since the points have been skewed towards the IF due to more consistent self-assessment, Chris W. is now in charge of assigning OF points. He will be going back a few games to reassess. If you have any problems with this process, see him (at your own risk).

I still think walks should only be 0.5 points per. For a variety of reasons.
1. The strike zone isn’t within the control of the pitcher, nor weather or wind. If its easy to throw consistent strikes, we wouldn’t need Charlie.
2. A pitcher has more chances to “screw up” per game vs OF or IF. That skews the points.
3. Tactically, sometimes its just best to unintentionally intentionally walk a guy - especially with a base open. Case in point from two weeks ago.. too many strikes is bad.

Ben, I have to disagree with you for the following reasons:
1. Granted that the strike zone isn’t always consistent but our pitchers are good enough to throw strikes under pretty much all conditions (we certainly wouldn’t apply points for walks if our pitchers weren’t good enough to throw strikes at will). I’m not saying it is easy but it is doable given the quality of our pitchers. Plus, you’ll notice that you and Charlie each only earned 1 point the past two weeks even though more than one walk was issues each week. If the ump is bad, it is usually obvious and we compensate. Plus we always assign + points in 1 point increments. If you want, I’d be happy to let pitchers self-assess based on walks but then the burden is on the pitchers to report.
2. I totally disagree with this point. If you look historically at the points, I think you’ll find that those who have accumulated the most are the IFers, particularly at SS, 2B, and 3B (plus we self-report consistently). Note that pitchers can also get -0.5 points for strikeouts along with other negative points for good plays like starting DPs, making great catches, etc. Also, I’m guessing if you look back at your points, the majority of them were not earned for pitching (ahem- baserunning…).
3. I guess this is a matter of opinion but there aren’t many hitters in the league like Jesse. Most guys won’t hit HRs and I’d rather see guys have to hit the ball through our defense than walk. In certain situations, it might make sense to walk someone but I don’t think we would count those as points anyway.
Also, I find it interesting that Charlie who pitches 95% of the innings doesn’t have an issue with the system. I’d love to hear from others on this issue as this points thing is owned by the team as a whole. Anyone else want to chime in?
